TIA Openness Manager MCP

The MCP server for TIA Portal: Claude and other AI agents work in your project, you confirm every change

TIA Openness Manager MCP is an MCP server for Siemens TIA Portal V15 to V21 and connects Claude Code or another MCP client to your project. The assistant reads blocks, tags, hardware, HMI, safety and security of your project and proposes changes; a terminal on your desk shows every command live and asks you before anything in the project changes. One licence with every tool, billed monthly, with a 14-day trial. The first release is coming soon.

Your AI assistant, the terminal and TIA Portal

How it works

1. Start the terminal

TIA Openness Manager MCP runs as a terminal app on your Windows workstation. Right after the start it lists the running TIA Portal instances with their version and project; pick one to connect, or let the assistant open a project file.

2. Connect your AI assistant

Register TIA Openness Manager MCP once in your MCP client, for example Claude Code. The assistant then finds the TIA Portal tools on its own and loads further tool groups only when it needs them.

Installation step by step

3. The assistant reads the project

Blocks and their source, data types, tags, cross references, the hardware tree, HMI screens, the safety program and the project security: reading asks nobody, and every call appears in the terminal with a spinner and its duration.

4. You confirm every change

Before a block is created, a tag changed, a device added or a project saved, the terminal shows what will happen and waits: Allow Once runs it, Skip cancels it. Without your answer nothing in the project changes.

What the assistant can do

TIA Portal tools for your AI assistant

01

PLC program

The assistant lists PLCs, blocks, data types, tags and tag tables, reads the source of a block page by page and compiles a PLC or a single object with its errors and warnings. After your confirmation it creates and renames blocks, data types and tag tables, changes tags and data block members, and imports generated SCL.

  • Blocks, data types, tags, technology objects, software units
  • Cross references, unused objects, compare with exported files
  • Folders created, renamed, moved and deleted
  • Compile with errors and warnings
02

Hardware and network

Stations, modules, the hardware tree, the topology and the hardware catalogue are read without a question. Devices, modules, subnets, IO systems, ports and addresses change after your confirmation, and the hardware editor of your TIA Portal opens on a device.

  • Stations, modules, device items and catalogue search
  • Subnets, PROFINET IO systems, ports and redundancy domains
  • CPU protection, OPC UA and web server users, certificates, system logging
  • AutomationML export and import of the project hardware
03

HMI

WinCC Unified screens, tags, alarms, logs, scripts, lists, connections and runtime settings, and the screens, lists and graphics of WinCC Comfort/Advanced devices. A screen is read as a summary or in full and written back after your confirmation.

  • WinCC Unified screens, tags, alarms, scripts and lists
  • WinCC Comfort/Advanced screens, lists and graphics
  • Screens created, renamed, resized and written back
  • Checks of a Unified device with every finding
04

Safety

The safety login state, runtime groups, F-signatures and safety settings of a fail-safe PLC, and the activation tests of the Safety Validation Assistant. You log in to the safety program in TIA Portal yourself; the assistant never does.

  • F-signatures and safety printout as a file
  • Safety settings changed after your confirmation
  • Activation tests, safety functions and their report
  • Safety passwords typed only in the terminal
05

Security, libraries and version control

Users, roles, rights and password settings of the project, the project library and global libraries with their master copies and types, and the version control workspaces of the project. A security change shows what it adds and removes first.

  • Users, user groups, roles and rights, never a password
  • Master copies, library types, global libraries
  • Workspaces connected, exported and synchronised
  • Every write after your confirmation
06

Projects, import and export

Open a project file or an archive in a TIA Portal without a window, create a new project or a complete one with devices, network and program, and export or import a whole PLC program. Profiles protect the items an import must leave alone.

  • Open, create, archive and close projects
  • Export All and Import All with progress and cancel
  • Profiles that protect items from an import
  • Saving only when you confirm it

The terminal decides, not the assistant

You stay in control

Every change asks first

A call that would change the project shows a confirmation in the terminal with the objects it touches. Without the terminal, such a call is refused.

Passwords stay out of the chat

Where a change needs a password, you type it into a masked field of the terminal. It goes to TIA Portal only and never reaches the assistant or the log files.

Files only where you expect them

Files are written only into your Documents, Desktop, OneDrive, the temporary folder, the export folder, the working folder or the folder of the open project.

Saving only when you say so

The project is saved only when you confirm a save or an archive. Closing a project or switching to another one never saves.

Requirements at a glance

Supported TIA Portal versions

TIA Portal V15 to V21

One program works with TIA Portal V15 through V21. A few functions need a newer version: the hardware compare V17, the unused objects and the library compare V18, communication connections, activation tests and text categories V21.

Windows 10 and 11

A single program for Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with nothing else to install. TIA Portal must be installed on the same machine, and your Windows user must be a member of the group "Siemens TIA Openness".

A terminal in four languages

The terminal speaks English, German, French and Italian and stays fully usable from 57 columns, so it fits half a Windows Terminal pane next to your assistant.

Frequently asked questions

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard through which an AI client calls tools on your machine. TIA Openness Manager MCP is such a server for Siemens TIA Portal: your AI client reads the blocks, tags, hardware and HMI of your project with it and changes them after your confirmation in the terminal.

Yes. Register TIA Openness Manager MCP once in Claude Code or another MCP client that can start a local MCP server; the installation guide shows how. Claude then works with the TIA Portal tools, and every change waits for your confirmation.

No. Every call that changes the project waits for your confirmation in the terminal, and the project is saved only when you confirm a save.

TIA Portal V15 through V21 on Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. A few functions need V17, V18 or V21; the FAQ lists them.
