Install TIA Openness Manager MCP
Requirements, TIA Openness and the first connection for TIA Portal V15 to V21
TIA Openness Manager MCP connects your AI assistant to TIA Portal through TIA Openness, the programming interface of Siemens TIA Portal. Windows and TIA Portal need a few settings before that works. This page lists the requirements and walks through the setup step by step.
TIA Openness Manager MCP for TIA Portal V15 to V21
Requirements and setup
1. System requirements
- Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
- Siemens TIA Portal, any version from V15 to V21, installed on the same machine
- Your Windows user is a member of the group "Siemens TIA Openness" (step 3)
- Any MCP client with local (stdio) server support, e.g. Claude Code
- Windows Terminal recommended for the full terminal display
- Internet connection for sign-in and the licence check
TIA Openness Manager MCP is a single program with nothing else to install.
2. Supported TIA Portal versions
- TIA Portal V15 to V21
- To connect to a running TIA Portal, start it with your project first
- To open a project file or an archive, TIA Openness Manager MCP starts its own TIA Portal without a window
- A few functions need a newer version: the hardware compare V17, the unused objects and the library compare V18, communication connections, activation tests and text categories V21
- Several TIA Portal versions can be installed side by side; a project needs the TIA Portal version that matches its file
3. The "Siemens TIA Openness" user group
TIA Portal only accepts TIA Openness connections from Windows users who are members of the local group "Siemens TIA Openness". The TIA Portal setup creates the group; membership has to be added by hand.
- Open Computer Management (right-click Start, then Computer Management)
- Go to Local Users and Groups, then Groups, then "Siemens TIA Openness"
- Add your Windows user (a domain account works as well) as a member
- Sign out of Windows and back in so the membership takes effect
On Windows editions without Local Users and Groups, run
net localgroup "Siemens TIA Openness" <user> /add in an elevated command prompt.
4. TIA Openness confirmation dialog
The first time a program accesses TIA Portal through TIA Openness, TIA Portal may show a confirmation dialog and ask whether the program may connect. Confirm the access for TIA Openness Manager MCP once with "Yes to all"; the release notes say whether the release registers itself so that the dialog does not appear.
5. Register TIA Openness Manager MCP in your MCP client
- Start TIA Openness Manager MCP first: the terminal must be running before your assistant connects
- Register TIA Openness Manager MCP once in your MCP client as a local MCP server; the release notes contain the entry for Claude Code
- Your MCP client starts the connection to the running terminal by itself from then on
The assistant starts with the core tools and loads further tool groups, such as hardware, HMI or safety, when it needs them.
6. First connection
- Start TIA Portal and open your project, or let the assistant open a project file later
- Start TIA Openness Manager MCP: the running TIA Portal instances appear as a list with version and project
- Pick one with the arrow keys and Enter, or click it, to connect
- Ask your assistant about the project: every call appears in the terminal, and every change waits for your confirmation there
Both ways use TIA Openness, so the user group and the confirmation dialog above apply to both.
7. Troubleshooting
- TIA Portal refuses the connection: check the membership in the "Siemens TIA Openness" group and sign in to Windows again
- The assistant finds no TIA Portal tools: start TIA Openness Manager MCP before your MCP client connects
- The project does not open: make sure the TIA Portal version matching the project file is installed
- No instance appears: start TIA Portal and TIA Openness Manager MCP as the same Windows user
- The terminal shows simple characters only: open it in Windows Terminal
- Licence not recognised: check the device binding in your account under /profile
